Double glazing has been the norm in Europe and the USA during the last 30 years, and it has only just started to gain traction in Australia. We wanted to answer some of the often asked questions that come up when we inform our customers about the products they are buying and how they will benefit from them as this amazing new product continues to enter more and more homes every year.

We won't be able to cover all the advantages of making the conversion from single to double glazing here, but maybe we can help those who are still unsure about whether to undertake this significant home improvement.

What is double glazing?

By putting two panes of glass on each side of an insulating gas, double glazing stops heat from escaping or entering through the window. Single glazing often permits a lot of thermal energy to pass through the glass since it will be in contact with the two different temperatures on the inside and the outside. If you apply this to a home, there are several places where heat may escape.

In a double-glazed window, each pane of glass may feel the temperature on either side of the window. The insulating gas that fills the gap between the glass panes and prevents one from touching the other keeps the interior and outside temperatures apart from one another.

What are the workings of insulating gas?

Argon is the inert gas that is often utilised to keep the two glass panes apart and apart from one another. Thermal energy is passed through the object when hot and cold particles interact. Since heat always seeks for the coolest regions, maintaining a steady temperature is difficult. However, insulating gases like argon lose thermal energy very slowly, and the argon between the two panes of glass essentially absorbs it.

The process helps to keep the inside of the house at a stable temperature. When it's chilly outside, the insulating gas stops thermal energy from rapidly evaporating through the window, keeping things warm inside for a longer period of time. On the other hand, when it's cold inside, thermal energy is trapped outside.

How should frames be used?

At Ecovue Double Glazing, every product is framed in uPVC. uPVC is a widely popular product in both Europe and the US, much like double glazing. It is a brilliantly affordable alternative to aluminium, and the product's durability is far higher than that of wood. Particularly in terms of security and thermal efficiency, conventional wood systems have a history of degrading and losing effectiveness over time.

uPVC is a recyclable alternative to wood since it does not decay over time as hardwood does. When the window has fulfilled its duty, the installation may be taken down and the window may be utilised in future projects

What are the dual glazing's main benefits?

In summary, there are three in total:

  • increased thermal efficiency
  • a significant decrease in noise
  • additional security measures

Thermal efficiency was discussed in the section on the insulating gas.

With our double glazing, you might cut the noise levels in your house by nearly 90%! The process works very much as it does for thermal energy. Noise may be carried via vibrations in the airborne particles. When sound disperses and goes across space, it becomes less loud. Since a louder sound disturbs the air around it more, it requires more space to disperse. On the other hand, a quiet noise hardly disrupts any of the surrounding air, preventing it from travelling far since it vanishes so quickly. Noise dissipates significantly more when it passes through a solid object because it is difficult to make solid particles vibrate in the same way that gas molecules do. If there is an extra pane of glass and a layer of inert gas for the noise to go through, the noise is far less bothersome to you inside your home.

Greater ease may be had in achieving better security than the other two benefits. Two panes of glass are thicker than one, as shown by basic arithmetic, making it more difficult for attackers to break through. In terms of the amount of protection they provide the home, the multi-lock systems on our uPVC frames are also the finest available. In other words, our double glazing will significantly increase the safety of your home.
